The Light Forsaken

The others cannot know the pain
That drove you to this fate.
They cannot feel your fury
And they’ll never heal your hate.

They cannot feel your sorrow
And they cannot know your shame.
Nor can they feel the longing now
That burns you like a flame.

They cannot know your passion,
Nor how strongly you regret
The choices that your dying soul
Will not let you forget.

Eternally, this burden shall you
Always, ever bear.
And never shall you find a soul
With whom your pain to share.

They’ll never know you suffer,
And they’ll never know you mourn
The actions that have ended in
Your dark heart being torn.

They’ll never understand
That you wish you could undo
All the pain you’ve ever caused,
Nor that these acts you rue.

They’ll see you as a monster
And they’ll never see you weep.
These sorrows now are yours alone
Forevermore to keep.

They’ll never see the tears that fall
Beneath your shadowed hood.
They’ll never know that you
Would take it all back if you could.

For the fury and the hatred
That now tear your soul apart
Are not meant for those others
But the darkness in your heart.

They cannot know you hate yourself
For everything you’ve done.
They’ll never know the battle
In your heart that can’t be won.

The world cannot remember
How into the dark you fell,
They cannot ease your suffering
Nor save you from this hell.

They’ll never understand
That the hood you’ve come to wear,
A symbol of your mourning,
Is to cover your despair.

You thought that you were stronger
In the shadow of the dark.
You never knew that it would steal
Your vibrant, lively spark.

Seduced by its enigma,
An enshrouded mystery,
You feel into the mire
Of an endless misery.

And now that you are lost
To the depths of solitude,
Your sins have left you all alone
In shadow’s wake to brood.

The world will never realize
That because of all you’ve failed,
You cannot look upon yourself,
And so your face is veiled.

They’ll never see the tears
That beneath your veil are falling,
And they’ll never hear the echo
Of the light forsaken calling.

For when given but a taste
Of the light you had forgot,
Your soul no longer is content
Within the dark to rot.

You know you don’t deserve
From this prison to be free.
You know that all your gloom
Is but a fitting destiny.

Yet when your tear-stained eyes
Look upon that distant sun,
Does not your aching soul yearn
Towards its healing light to run?

There is no forgiveness
For the evil that you did.
But does your heart not wish
Of this darkness to be rid?

I ask because I’ve seen it.
I ask because I’ve known
Your pain and misery,
And what it’s like to be alone.

I ask because I, too, am lost
Within this infinite night.
And because I’ve seen what comes
When shadow is moved by light.
Well, I have to wake up for class in 4 hours, but instead of sleeping I wrote this.

The last line is inspired by the end of The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess, but I won't give away any spoilers. :P

The rest of the poem is kind of inspired by Star Wars - Episode III, the scene where Anakin is standing on the bridge on Mustafar, looking into the sun, and sheds a tear beneath his hood. I like to think that the reason for the tear was because of his regret, and how because of the things he'd done, he is stuck on the path down the Dark Side. But, that's just my opinion. Anyway, enjoy. :)

The ending is meant to be slightly positive, at least, because the narrator shares the person's pain, and so they are not alone. I've been thinking for a little while about what defines a person as evil, and that if they truly regret what they did, even to the point where they hate themselves for it, are they really evil?

Wow... this is like me. I relate to Anakin on SO many levels. Granted, I haven't done anything as bad as he has, but I've been in the whole situation where I'm the angsty, emotional one who feels powerless and wants to be appreciated but feels that no one likes them. Good poem!
